Pretend to be nobility as you admire the Hofvijver.
Hofvijver, which translates to “Court Pond” in Dutch, is an impressive expanse of water at the center of the city, with majestic buildings and lush greenery surrounding it. The term “pond” is actually a misnomer, and it is more accurate to call Hofvijver a lake. In fact, it is a natural dune lake that is fed by a small brook.
Photo opportunities abound at this historic place, where Hague’s beginning took root. Along with the Ridderzaal, the Hofvijver was part of the hunting lodge of the Count of Holland back in the 14th century.
You can even view the Prime Minister’s office from here, and not to worry - all efforts to swim there are thwarted by the underwater gate installed. Take a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge, soaking in the ambience and letting go off the tension in your shoulders. Be sure to take your camera with you, to capture a few Instagram-worthy shots! When night falls, the surrounding buildings are set aglow with mesmerizing lights that reflect off the water. The sight is so stunning you might find it difficult to tear yourself away from this marvelous place.
