Explore the former imperial palace at the heart of Vienna.

The Hofburg was built in the 13th century, and this impressive structure has since expanded. It was the imperial winter residence, and today, is the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria. Hofburg, which means “Castle of the Court”, has been the seat of powerful rulers, including Habsburg kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire.


Centuries of history, are etched in the opulence that is the Hofburg, with intricate carvings and vaulted ceilings. You can find all kinds of architectural styles, from Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque to Rocco. Often called a “city within a city”, it is no surprise, for the castle also has many squares and gardens and has a total of 18 groups of buildings! There will be no lull in your experience, for you can explore the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver Collection. Deep red curtains, lavish decorations and glinting chandeliers are just a part of the many apartments in the castle, and you can even make your way to those of Franz Joseph and his tragic empress, Elisabeth. Tips Before You Go
The castle is open for a slightly shorter while from September to June. If you are visiting in groups of 10 or more, a reservation is required. Do note that bulky objects and luggage are not allowed.
