Hjálparfoss

A majestic double waterfall surrounded by rugged basalt cliffs.

Hjálparfoss, or “Help Waterfall” in English, has an ominous name that has a more banal origin than it seems. For travellers crossing the Highlands to the south in the past, the lush greenery at Hjálparfoss was the first grass for weary horses, that was how Hjálparfoss acquired its reputation as helpful. While the waterfall no longer holds such a purpose, it is still a stunning natural attraction that unravels your stress.

More wide than it is tall, Hjálparfoss more than makes up for its smaller stature with its unique combination of not just one, but two water cascades that meet at the plunge pool, interesting basalt formations encircling the waterfall lagoon, and elegant mountains backing the cliff. Interestingly, this lovely waterfall was also used in a couple of scenes in the popular series “Games of Thrones”! From your vantage point at the edge of the plunge pool, you will get a close-up view of the gushing waters unlike any other place you have ever seen. In this space, you will only be surrounded by utter scenic wilderness, completely uninterrupted by any other travellers.
