Hiroshima City Asa Zoological Park (広島市安佐動物公園)

See the zoo behind the successful artificial insemination of frozen sperm from a dead Chimpanzee.

Located in Hiroshima, the City Asa Zoological Park spans a vast area of almost 50 hectares. Officially opened in 1971, it is the 62nd zoo in Japan and has engaged with other zoos in the conservation of endangered species. The Hiroshima City Asa Zoological Park boasts of having successfully bred the giant Japanese salamanders as well as the black rhinoceros. In 1998, this zoo was the first in the world to artificially inseminate frozen sperm from a dead Chimpanzee.

Visitors will be thrilled to see lions up close through the installation of the ‘Leo Glass’. Kids will especially love the Pichiku Park where they get to pet cute animals such as bunnies and guinea pigs or ride on ponies. With an interesting variety of animals housed in this verdant zoo, it is a great place to visit.
