Hillsborough River

This is one of Florida’s oldest state parks.

Rapids? That’s right! Although you might think of a gently flowing stream of water, the Hillsborough River features rapids as it passes through Hillsborough River State Park. The first trickles of the river began within the Green Swamp, and end as they flow into the waters at Tampa Bay. The watershed of the river was once covered by rich forest, including bald cypress and sand live oak. However, the nature you see today will be much different from that of the past, since most of the older trees were cut down due to lumbering activity.

Of course, there remains an abundance of plant and animal species that are a delight to gaze at today. Whether you hike seven miles of nature tiles, or canoe upstream along the winding river, you are bound to be captivated. While on your hike, you might come across the impressive Cass Street Rail Bridge, which hangs a few feet above the river. If you’re hyped up to try jet-skiing and water-skiing, downstream of the river is a popular location. If you catch sight of something from the corner of your eye, slowly turn and don’t startle! After all, it could be an alligator lying in wait on the opposite bank, perfectly still as it awaits an unknowing fish. To end your day, settle down by the river to enjoy a delicious picnic, and relax in the tranquil atmosphere as the water gurgles past.
