The Heunginjimun Gate was constructed to protect Hanseongbu, which historically used to house important government amenities. It was one of eight gates on the outer wall of Seoul Fortress and is often referred to by tourists and locals alike as the Dongdaemun Gate. It was established by King Taejo in 1396 which was his fifth year on the throne, but was remodelled during King Danjong’s reign in 1453. The gate was finally rebuilt in 1869 during the sixth year of King Gojong’s reign. It has a hipped roof which comprises of five front compartments and two on the side of its two-storied structure. Outside the fortress is a half-circle shaped Ongseong or small wall which also protects the gate. The gate is open all year round to visitors, so drop by anytime to have a look!
