Henty Dunes

Tucked between the oasis of blue that is the Indian Ocean and dense temperate rainforests is the Henty Dunes, a slice of the Sahara within the Tasmanian hinterlands.

Stretching across 15km of rolling sand dunes, the Henty Dunes are set along the road between the settlements of Zeehan and Strahan. One look at the deep sand craters and hills dotting the landscape and it becomes evident that the area isn’t termed the largest moving dune system in Tasmania without reason. Most visitors come to the dunes armed with sandboards and toboggans, cresting the peaks to reach the highest tips for an exhilarating downhill thrill ride. For the inexperienced, the milder slopes serve as a better start to ease you into the action. Making the uphill climb against slippery white grains underfoot is not easy but once you reach the top, the view is bound to sweep you away. Thick swathes of bleach white form swirls and patterns amidst adjacent peaks, contrasted by the stark olive green of orderly pine plantations to one side. It takes some effort to pry your eyes away from the scenery, but you’ll have absolutely no regrets as you slide down the sand on your trusty toboggan. Other forms of adrenaline include highly competitive quad bike races down the slopes, leaving stark prints that are covered in seconds by the constant sand drifts. To end the day, you can even enjoy a picnic under the shade at the small shelter constructed by the dunes. As you’re about to leave, the memory of adrenaline pumping rides and slopes will remain clinging to you along with a fine layer of sand.

Tips Before You Go
Though the Henty Dunes are considerably well-known among locals and tourists, there are no food establishments on site. There are no refreshments available either. In fact most of the equipment required to experience the dunes must be collected at Strahan before driving down. In addition to these supplies, remember to keep a pair of sunglasses handy as sand is often kicked up a meter high or more when it gets windy, and this will prevent grains from getting in your eyes.
