In commemoration of the 1,100th year anniversary of Heian-kyo.
Dating back only to 1895, the Heian Shrine was built to commemorate the 1,100th year anniversary of the founding of Heian-kyo (Kyoto). Visitors will be greeted with a massive bright orange torii gate at the shrine's entrance which stands at about 24 meters tall and is one of the tallest and largest gates in Japan. The main buildings of this shrine are a partial replica of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian Period, and there are also some museums scattered around the spacious grounds of the shrine. A beautiful garden is located at the rear of the shrine, and visitors can admire the weeping cherry trees that grow in the garden, which bloom later than most other cherry trees. For that reason, this garden is a hotspot for cherry blossom viewing in Kyoto. However, note that there is an entrance fee to access the garden.
