Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Get up and close with these unrelenting forces of nature.

Have you read of those terrible volcanic eruptions that can wipe out an entire city? Want to embark on an adventure to discover all about volcanoes? Then, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the place to be! Found on Big Island, the park has two active volcanoes: Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, along with a whole slew of activities for all visitors.

If you’re up for some leg work, explore the various trails in the park via a hike, and walk through legions of trees and thick ferns. Why not hike to the Kilauea’iki Crater? It was formed only half a century ago! For those of you who prefer to enjoy the view in comfort, the Crater Rim Drive will take you past desert, verdant greenery and the caldera floor. You can even drop by the viewing area at Jaggar Museum, and photographers can be sure to have some fantastic views from here. If you have more time on your hands, continue on the meandering Chain of Craters Road. What awaits you is a sight of the road literally overtaken by lava flow from Kīlauea. Here, the lava flows right into the ocean, and the magnificent glow can be seen from the Halema’umau crater at night. If you’re itching for more thrill and adventure, make your way into the Thurston lava tube, which you can even explore overnight in the pitch dark. No matter what you do here, you’re bound to leave, awe-struck in the presence of a marvelous force of nature.
