Havasu Falls

The Havasu Baaja’s secret.

The magnificent Havasu Falls can be found deep in the Grand Canyon on tribal land belonging to the Havasupai Indian Tribe, the Havasu Baaja. It is only apt that Havasu Baaja means “the People of the Blue Green Water”, as Havasu Falls’ is known for its distinct turquoise waters. The colour comes from naturally occurring calcium carbonate and magnesium in the waters that forms a stark yet beautiful contrast with the canyon’s red rocks. Being in such a remote area, the Havasu Falls has been of utmost importance in the Havasu Baaja’s lives for centuries by being an excellent source of water for drinking and crop cultivation such as corn and beans.

To preserve the sacred land’s history and natural beauty, the number of visitors per year are limited. As such, reservations must be made in advance, typically at the beginning of the year. The hike to the tribe’s village alone is strenuous – it is eight miles from below the Grand Canyon’s rim – and an overnight hike is recommended. Wear appropriate hiking attire and bring sufficient food and water as facilities are limited. Despite the challenging journey to the falls, the opportunity to immerse in the charm of the Havasu Baaja’s land, traditional culture, and exquisite arts and crafts will make it worth your time and effort.
