Haus des Meeres

A gem of an aquarium known to little.

This public aquarium (turned zoo) in the capital of Austria is found inside an unassuming concrete tower. This tall, flak tower was built during World War II, and is an impressive sight even from afar. The slogan wrapped atop the tower, created by Lawrence Weiner, an American artist, is equally eye-catching. The Haus des Meeres, which means “House of the Sea”, truly represents its name. With over ten thousand aquatic creatures within the building, the aquarium is a delight.

Follow the large leatherback turtle, or smile along with the large manta rays. Gaze at the pure white hammerhead shark, or have a blink-off with the mantis shrimp, whose punch can, quite literally, kill any other animal within its reach. Well, the term “aquarium” can be quite deceptive, for you can find some land-dwelling animals here. Gaze at the open jaws of an impossibly large snake, with only thin glass between you and impending doom, or bats hanging within reach as they rest in the light of the day. Head up to the observation decks for a delightful panoramic view of Vienna, with picturesque houses and buildings forming a maze of endless paths. Your trip to the Haus des Meeres is well worth it!
