Hangzhou Zoo (杭州动物园)

As the macaws flit by and the hornbills stay perched at the edge of the pavilion’s beams, it’s almost as if you’ve stepped through strokes of ink into a Chinese painting.

Giant pandas lounging deep in dense pockets of bamboo, African lions and Siberian tigers slipping through the thick brambles and brush and Yangtze alligators resting along the banks of a carefully landscaped enclosure; these are just some of the sights you’re likely to see at Hangzhou Zoo. The zoo is a mainstay of any tour to Hangzhou, a popular attraction for young and old alike. Over 2000 animals call the Hangzhou zoo home and visitors can learn more about the 200 different species located at the zoo. Besides the enclosures, the zoo hosts various shows that are sure to entertain and educate. Laugh at the bears’ antics as they take part in boxing and skiing or the practiced stunts of the sea lions. Don’t forget to leave the zoo without a picture! The zoo is modeled based on traditional Chinese architecture with various pavilions and picturesque gardens dotting the compound, giving it a unique ambience. One surely can’t go wrong choosing the Hangzhou zoo for a fun day out with the family.

Tips Before You Go
Part of the West Lake Scenic Area, the Hangzhou zoo often features as part of a tour around the West Lake. The research focus of the zoo also makes it ideal for school tour groups but is just as intriguing for those of you with a love for animals and the great outdoors. That said, tour groups and families flock the zoo’s gates on public holidays and the crowds can be rather stifling. The opening hours also differ slightly between the summer and winter months but in most cases, shouldn’t cause major disruptions.
