What is a trip to Iceland without paying homage to the country’s main landmark?
No, this is not the Beauty and the Beast castle. It is the Hallgrimskirkja church, the pride of Iceland. This iconic building stands tall in the middle of Reykjavik city at a whopping 240 feet and a view from its very top will give you an incredibly beautiful 360⁰ aerial view of not only the capital city, but also of the ocean that extends towards Greenland. On a clear day, you will even see Snaefellsjokull glacier. Hallgrimskirkja was designed in 1937 by an architect named Guðjón Samúelsson, who was inspired by Icelandic nature, especially the basalt columns in Svartifoss waterfall. The resemblance of the columns on the church building is mind-blowing. Apart from its stunning design and height, the church is also famous for its enormous pipe organ, designed and built by Johannes Klais, a German organ builder whose company runs till today. Outside near the entrance, you will find a statue of the first European to discover America, the Viking Leifur Eiríksson. You certainly don’t want to skip Hallgrimskirkja during your stay in Iceland!
