Hai Van Pass

Appreciate the views and thrills offered by Vietnam’s highest mountain pass.

At the Hai Van Pass, you will see a view so perfect that it will give you goosebumps. Spanning 25km long and resting 500m above sea level, the mountain pass is the highest one to be found in the country. Popularised by the well-known programme “Top Gear”, the pass is known to be a great place to take to the open road and enjoy the winding sweep through your hair as you cruise through the pass. Be warned though, the sloping, winding roads can prove to be treacherous to some, and most casual drivers opt to take the Hai Van tunnel if their aim is to just commute between Hue and Da Nang. Nonetheless, the pass remains popular amongst motorcyclists and cyclists who do not mind a challenge and want to enjoy a scenic view. As you trod along, you will get to see the Tien Sa Port, Da Nang Bay, the South China Sea, and other major attractions. If you work up an appetite, feel free to take a break along the coastline, quenching your hunger and thirst with coffee and food available for your consumption along the Hai Van Pass.

Tips Before You Go
If you choose to go on a motorcycle tour, do note that it is difficult for novice riders, as there are slopes. Also, if visiting between September-March, be prepared for wet weather and risky conditions. The best time to traverse the pass is to do it during the dry season from around April-October.
