Hagios Demetrios

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and monument dedicated to St Demetrius!

The Church of Saint Demetrius, otherwise known as Hagios Demetrios in short, is the main sanctuary built in Saint Demetrius’ name. He was the patron saint of the city of Thessaloniki in Greece, back when it was the second largest within the Byzantine Empire. It is currently part of the site Palaeochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki and earned its UNESCO World Heritage status since 1988.

One of the main attractions of the church is what’s underneath it - where St. Demetrios was martyred by a spear. The crypt also features a wide display of sculptures, slabs and vessels from the Church of St Demetrios. There are several rooms containing other artefacts - for example, room III displays photographs and plans of the restoration works done to the church after the fire and room IV features sculptures from the decoration of the church built after the fire. A place rich in history, take your time as you wander around the church.
