Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (해동 용궁사)

An impressive temple commanding Busan’s beautiful shoreline.

Most temples are hidden away within mountains, but Haedong Yonggungsa Temple seems to be sitting commandingly on top of the sea, and is truly an impressive sight to behold. Constructed in 1376 by a great Buddhist teacher called Naong, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple boasts majestic views of clear blue skies and waves crashing relentlessly against coastal rocks. The temple is built into an alcove in the seaside cliffs and possesses an air of tranquil authority - probably much like the man who created it.

The main sanctuary of the temple is a welcoming sight, with its vibrantly painted walls and pillars as well as a smiling golden Buddha next to it. Right in front of it stands a magnificent 3-storey pagoda decorated with four lion structures symbolising happiness, sadness, anger and joy. No visit is complete without a stroll down the 108 stairs where you can take time to appreciate and revel in the calming view of the coastlines and the crimson sunset in the evening.

Tips Before You Go
Visit the temple on New Year’s Day for an auspicious start to the year, or in April to see the temple covered in delicate pink cherry blossoms. In the fourth lunar month, or sometime around May, lanterns are lit in the temple to celebrate the Buddha’s birthday.
