Haba Snow Mountain

Leaving footprints in winter’s white at 5,400m.

In breath exhaled, frost materialises in rhythm with every effort exerted in marching over the thick powdered snow, but only for an instant as the sudden arrival of cold heavy winds, nature’s heralds riding with trumpets declaring its master’s superiority, that have decided on passage over this mountain pass to a destination known only to itself, would sweep apart the loose, amorphous structure of vapours formed by man, and cast away all preoccupations and distractions that dare steal attention away from it. Nevertheless, progress along the white road is maintained, unabated, and with each step sunk into the soft snow, a sense of strong purpose sustained by a keen awareness that the individual’s existence is rooted wholly in the present is reinforced, fortifying the resolve. While nurturing their perseverance, glaring down from above, offering a gentle warmth to rid of the discomforts of freezing temperatures that act to make forward motion, physically and psychologically, turgid, is the sun that while of greater proximity, its heat does nothing to annoy the senses, instead it soothes them of their exhaustion.
