Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond (경주 동궁과 월지, 안압지)

A haven of tranquility and beauty.

With its lush trees and tranquil waters, Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is the perfect place for those looking for some peace and quiet, to reconnect with their inner zen. “Wolji” means “a pond reflecting the moon” - a fitting name for the beautiful pond in the middle of the palace grounds. The Gyeongju Donggung Palace, as well as the three pagodas in the garden, are painted in rippling strokes on the still, calm surface of the Wolji Pond.

At night, the lights turn on in the palace and are reflected in the pond, making its now-dark waters seem to contain little balls of fire in their depths. Even more stunning than their images on the water is the buildings themselves. Each roof beam is painted with a delicate pink flower against three different shades of green, and features intricate carvings. A leisurely stroll through the palace grounds will be unforgettable. Immersed in the picturesque surroundings, the Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is sure to bring out your inner poet and make you feel as if you’ve stepped into an Asian watercolour painting.

Tips Before You Go
The best time to visit is in the late afternoon. Start with a tour of the buildings while there is still enough light to appreciate the intricate woodwork and paintings. As night falls, make your way to a comfy spot across the palace and watch as the lights go on both in the palace and in the pond. Ticket sales close at 9.30pm, half an hour before the park closes, but be sure to purchase your tickets a few hours before closing to avoid the rush of last-minute sales.
