Gukje Market (남포동 국제시장)

One of South Korea’s largest markets!

The Gukje Market is one of Korea’s largest markets today and is a popular attraction for visiting tourists and South Koreans alike. It traces its roots all the way back to the Korean War where refugees escaping to Busan set up stalls in this area to make a living for themselves. This was the beginning of the market, with “gukje” directly translating to “international”. Each of the alleyways in the market are often packed with various stalls, connecting to the nearby Bupyeong and Kkangtong Markets. The market stocks a wide array of goods, produce and appliances, which will definitely leave you spoilt for choice. Regardless of whether you happen to chance upon the area, or if you are just looking for something to occupy your time with, the market is a good place to head down to. Rest assured, you’ll be in for a treat!

Tips Before You Go
The street vendors here only accept cash, so remember to bring along some Korean won with you when you come visit. Bargaining is also accepted here, but do remember to be polite when doing so. You might also wish to come on a weekday instead of a weekend, as the market is less crowded then.
