Grotfjord Beach

A remote, majestic beach on the edge of the Arctic.

On the coast of Kvaløya lies Grotfjord Beach, a remote escape from the crowded city and a great alternative to the more mainstream beaches near the city which can get extremely crowded during the summer.

The sandy beach is set against the backdrop of a quaint village at the foot of sheer cliffs and is flanked by majestic mountains. During the winter months, you will be treated to snow-capped mountains just across the water and warm, welcoming lights behind, creating an enchanting image which has found its way into the albums of photographers.

In summer, the beach plays host to visitors looking to escape the crowds in the mainland beaches. Enjoy a long stroll along the beach, taking in the beautiful scenery around you, or rent a boat and go fishing for dinner on the high seas. At night, the lonely, majestic beach lights up with a stunning display of the Aurora Borealis. Its remote location, far from the sources of light pollution, makes Grotfjord Beach one of the best places to view the Northern Lights, which dance unobstructed for hours through the clear night sky.

Tips Before You Go
Driving is the most common way to get to the beach though drivers should be prepared to face narrow roads. The active and adventurous can also choose to hike through the mountains. As for how best to enjoy the magical Aurora Borealis, doing so with a bon fire to keep it warm and cosy will be perfect.
