Gramvousa Fort

An expertly camouflaged cliff-side fortress on a the island of Imeri Gramvousa.

When you look at the island from afar, it is difficult to spot the vast remnants of the Gramvousa Fort jutting out from the cliff. Built on the crest of the highest hill on the island, the fort offers a stunning spectacle of the sea in every direction. Inside the fort, you can choose to explore the ruins of a chapel and several guard posts or take in the gorgeous view of the sea set alight by the sun as it sets.

For the eagle-eyed, you can also attempt to spot the rusty remains of a shipwreck protruding from the clear blue waters. While the Gramvousa Fort was the stronghold for pirates for a brief period, this shipwreck is nothing as exciting as a pirate ship destroyed in a battle. But as you amble through the fort, the beautiful sights make it hard not to imagine epic tales that potentially unfolded here.
