Government Gardens

Visit the museum, Blue Baths and more at this historical site.

Holding historical significance to the Maori people, the Government Gardens is a public park located by Lake Rotorua in central Rotorua. Originally known as Paepaekumana, many significant battles have taken place here, before the Maori ended up gifting 50 acres of this land to the British Crown in the late 1800s. A large bathhouse was constructed here in 1908, followed by a second bathhouse, the Blue Baths, in 1933. Today, both bathhouses are historical sites, with the first being converted into the Rotorua Museum. The Blue Baths have been fully restored, retaining its original function, and visitors can come and relax in the waters while enjoying the Mediterranean setting of the baths. There are many other historical and important sites within the Government Gardens too, so take your time to stroll through this park!

Tips Before You Go
There are free tours of the gardens offered, so remember to check beforehand as to what time they start. Besides that, the gardens can be extremely packed on the weekends, especially with tourists seeking to relax in the Blue Baths. As such, it would be better to come on a weekday instead. After all, less people means more time to just soak in the relaxing atmosphere here.
