The connection between the North and the South.
Framed by spectacular giants of a mountain in the heart of the Swiss Alps, the Gotthard Pass cuts through one of the most scenic and stunning regions of central Switzerland and is the main connection between the North and the South. Home to the turbulent Reuss river and the deep Schöllenen Gorge, the pass was once deemed impassable by the Romans, but has since become a magnet for tourists as Switzerland’s longest historical monument with the most breath-taking of views.
Traverse across the pass by three major tunnels, each being the longest at their point of construction: the Gotthard Rail Tunnel, the Gotthard Road Tunnel, and the Gotthard Rail Base Tunnel. If you’re crossing the pass in summer, spice up your journey by taking the road over the pass, and experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel up to one of Switzerland’s highest peak at 2,106-metres. Through the southern side of the pass, ride through tight hairpin turns and serpentine curves across the cobblestone paved Tremola, stretching from the impressive peak of the pass to the municipality of Airolo. Visitors can even experience nostalgic modes of transportation by travelling on foot, by bike, in a nostalgic Postbus, or via the classic horse-drawn carriage dating from the 19th-century as they journey through one of Switzerland’s most scenic routes.
