Gol Stave Church

Despite changing its location, it still maintains its magnetism.

When you hear the tale behind the Gol Stave Church, you might feel compelled to visit it. After all, it is akin to a phoenix rising from the ashes, as the current church in Bygdøy is actually constructed from part of the materials used to make the original church in Gol. The original church that was located in Gol, whose structure dates back to the Middle Ages, was dismantled in the 19th century, and its reconstruction in Oslo was sponsored by King Oscar II. A visit here will let you feel what it was like for Norwegian worshippers in the past. Just by stepping into the church, filled with wood and detailed carvings, it will be as if you embarked on a time travelling trip. While it is now considered part of the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, you can still feel the sacred atmosphere when you visit the Gol Stave Church.

Tips Before You Go
The church is located near an open-air museum in Oslo, so why not plan your visit here accordingly to accommodate that as well? Although the church is no longer in active use, you are more than welcome to spend a few minutes in silent contemplation here. Just take note that it is not open all the time though. It follows the opening hours of the museum that it is part of.
