Immerse yourself in ancient art at Munich’s oldest public museum.
If you think the word Glyptothek sounds like a fake, made-up word, well, you would be right. A combination of the ancient Greek terms "glyphein" (to carve) and "theke" (repository), make up the name of this museum in Munich, Germany. Glyptothek is unique in the sense that it is the only one in the world that is committed to exclusively displaying ancient sculptures, due to the insistence of King of Bavaria Ludwig I. Although the original building was established during the 19th century, the perils of war warranted reconstruction, which was thus completed in 1972. The collection has masterpieces all the way from the Archaic period (6th century BC) until Late Antiquity (1st - 5th century AD). Be awestruck by the beauty of these sculptures, and learn a thing or two about art history at the Glyptothek.
