Gizella Kopsick Arboretum

A small park that packs a large punch.

At 2 acres in total, this park is often overlooked, but we promise you won’t regret a visit here after stumbling across all the hidden wonders that it holds. With more than 500 palms and sciences of 150 different species including Encephalartos ferox and Cycas Scratchleyana, it’s endlessly fascinating to see the variety of leaf shape, trunks, bark and fruit that these palms produce, and fans of exotic foliage will go crazy reading all the informative signs. Even for those who just want to spend some time unwinding in nature, the benches scattered along the brick paved paths are the perfect spot to pause and contemplate life.

The existence of this pocket of paradise is owed to a Mrs Elva Rouse. The park used to be a miniature golf course that was closed down, and Mrs Rouse jumped at the opportunity to transform a valuable piece of land into something useful - an educational area that serves as a much needed spot of relaxation as well. The funding to set up the park came from another invested member of the community, Miss Gizella Kopsick, a long-time admirer of the palm tree. Miss Kopsick did not let the fact that she was confined to a wheelchair stop her from enjoying all the joys of a stroll through the park, designing the arboretum to be exceedingly wheelchair friendly and accessible to the handicapped. This extraordinary lady lived to a ripe old age, celebrating her 100th birthday by receiving the park as a dedication.

Tips Before You Go
It’s best to head to the park early before the heat of the sun starts to take its toll, since there isn’t much shade or shelter.
