Florence, Italy
Giotto’s Campanile

Does it ring a bell… or seven?

A campanile is simply a bell tower with more than one bell. In this case, Giotto’s Campanile houses seven that unfortunately were not named after the dwarves in Snow White. It is part of the Florence Cathedral and stands at 84.7 meters tall. The structure is a fine example of Gothic architecture and was designed by Giotto – a man who was said to have been able to draw a perfect circle without aid.

You can climb to the top of the tower, via a long spiral staircase consisting of 463 steps. The climb may be tedious, but the breath-taking view of Florence from the top is unparalleled. If you find yourself unable to make the climb, then you might want to just appreciate the gorgeous exterior of the campanile, made with 3 different kinds of marble. In fact, this is considered to be the most beautiful tower in Italy, so the views at the top may pale in comparison to the tower's magnificent facade. It's up to you to decide if the climb will be worth it then.

Tips Before You Go
Do note that there are no elevators here, so you will need to make the arduous climb to the top if you wish to see the spectacular views. Furthermore, the stairs can be filled with visitors during the summer months, so those with claustrophobia may find themselves feeling uncomfortable. If possible, do hang in there and you will soon find yourself at the very top, with gorgeous views waiting for you.
