Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔)

Its whimsical name belies its historical significance.

Located in Shaanxi province, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was first built during the Tang dynasty. It was then rebuilt again by Empress Wu Zetian with an additional five storeys in 704 A.D. Standing at a height of 64m, this structure offers a panoramic view of Xi'an. The architectural gem was actually built with layers of bricks without any cement, and one of its purposes was to hold the sutras and figurines of the Buddha brought to China from India by Xuanzang, the venerable monk featured in 'Journey to the West'. The Da ci'en Temple constructed in 648 A.D is home to a statue of Xuanzang. Be sure to look out for the stately lions guarding both sides of the gate, as these are believed to be talismans to ward off evil. Catch the harmonious water display which marries sound effects and lighting at the largest musical fountain in Asia too. The fountai also boasts the longest light belt and the biggest acoustic complex in the world, so rest assured you're in for a treat.

Tips Before You Go
The light shows at night attract huge crowds, so if you are not a huge fan of such displays (and crowds), then perhaps you might want to visit during the day instead. Photos are restricted in certain parts of the compound as well, as it is an active place of worship.
