Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art

Get a sneak peak into the home of a typical Omani while perusing striking modern art.

The dream project of Her Highness Sayyida Dr Ghalya Al Said, the Museum of Modern Art offers an impressive double whammy – part modern art gallery and part traditional Omani home. Experience the heritage and history of Oman from 1950 to 1975 through the old box of Kraft cheese and tins of biscuits, everyday objects that turned invaluable cultural artifacts.

The Wedding, the Kitchen and Display Rooms, the Mother and Children's Room, the Winter Room, the Living Room and more are all testaments to the custom, history and tradition of the Omani lifestyle. The contrastingly modern art that is displayed within exemplifies the contemporary art scene of Omani and hosts several exhibitions, events and workshops. There is even a Clothes museum incorporated into the concept, with a collection of traditional dresses through history to the present day, highlighting Oman’s evolution over the years through fashion and creativity.
