Gerakas Beach

Baby turtles, powder white sand and limestone bluffs standing sentinel to one end, Gerakas has more to it than meets the eye.

Located at the Southern tip of Zakynthos, Gerakas beach is at the edge of a cove that has been carved into the island. To one end, steep limestone bluffs climb towards the clear skies and guard the sandy shores from harsh waves. Gerakas Beach is famously known for its extended beachfront, forming a spit that leads out into the ocean and serves as a nesting site for the island’s much loved caretta caretta, or sea turtles.

Dig your toes into the pure white grains dusting the shores as the sunlight washes over you or beat the heat with a dive into the clear waters of Gerakas. Although the beach is closed off to visitors right before sunset till right after sunrise, the cliffs are a sight for sore eyes in the dawn light. The image of the radiant sun rising from behind the bare brown cliff face, shrouding it in shadows against the pale blue sky is one you wouldn’t want to miss. An early trip would also allow you to enjoy the pristine waters all for yourself before the peak hour hits. You might even be able to sign up to help in the hatching of the turtles’ eggs, watching the tiny creatures shuffle forward on their flippers towards the endless ocean. The home of the caretta caretta and touched by nature’s magic, the cliffs of Gerakas protect an endless trove of treasures.
