General Grant National Memorial

Remembering Ulysses Grant.

Also known as Grant’s Tomb, the tomb of the 18th President of the United States Ulysses Grant gives this landmark its name; and his last wish was to be laid to rest beside his wife. It is the largest mausoleum in the United States and a symbol of the people's gratitude towards the president who ended the Civil War in 1865. The two-term president died of throat cancer 20 years later in 1885, though Grant’s Tomb was only completed in 1897. The tomb is closed to visitors on Mondays and Tuesdays.
