Gasometro

To get far away from the madding tourist crowd in Rome, head to the Gasometro and relax by the Tiber River.

Unmissable in the skyline of Rome, the Gasometro is a welcome break from bustling Rome and serves as a contrast to its plethora of ancient monuments. This imposing structure is unique for it used to house Rome’s gas supply. With its name coined by William Murdoch, a Scottish engineer, the Gasometro is a structure designed in the early 20th century. Obsolete now for it no longer supplies gas to homes, it has thus become an industrial monument. Visible from Trastevere, a working-class district, this cylindrical structure is appealing in its own right and makes for an eye-catching picture.
