Gardens of Murillo (Jardin de Murillo)

Housing an arboreal centurion, the Gardens of Murillo is the perfect balance of nature and art for a break from the city.

Exploring an ancient city so full of culture and history at every corner can be tiring for even the most enthusiastic of travelers. It’s natural to seek out a bench by a sidewalk for a quick breather, to simply let time flow by as you take in the sights and sounds, the honking cars, the couples strolling by leisurely. In Seville, there is a space at the very center of the city where tranquility resides and distractors are walled off. These are the Gardens of Murillo. This small collection of trees and watering spouts began as a private enclosure known as the Retiro Gardens or Orchards before it was donated to the city council more recently. In line with embodying the city’s spirit, colorful ceramic sculptures and azulejos which the city is known for abound at unexpected corners for you to admire. That short dense tree by the glade might not seem like much but it might just be the park’s 100 year old ficus, planted alongside delicate white night jasmines. This is your space for a casual stroll before dinner or late at night to simply soak in Seville’s atmosphere.

Tips Before You Go
The easy accessibility of the Gardens of Murillo makes it a popular spot for the locals and tourists alike to take short walks and enjoy the serenity. An interesting fact is that the park is named after a famous painter from Seville. Murillo was buried in the church adjacent at the Plaza de Santa Cruz and his name was given to the garden posthumously as a tribute.
