They say that Green is the calmest colour for the eye, which certainly proves true as it seems that there’s nothing like a well-kept English garden to soothe the soul and reorganise the mind.
The Garden Society of Gothenburg is hailed as one of the best preserved 19th century parks in Sweden. Greenhouses, sculptures, restaurants and cafes galore, all set among natural rows of flower beds and neatly trimmed grass. The Palm House gleams in the sunlight in the very centre of the park. Inspired by the much lauded Crystal Palace in London, the Palm House is a masterpiece of architecture, and in its 1000 square metres, holds exotic plants native to far away lands like the Mediterranean, including of course its namesake, palm trees of various species. The woodland area showcases horticultural art by well-known landscapers like Ulf Nordfjell, Jacqueline van der Kloet and Julie Toll, who have had their hand in shaping the garden into the triumph it is today. But above it all, what steals the show is the garden’s acclaimed Rosarium, which has been awarded several stars in the Michelin Green Guide, and whose beautiful blooms stand 4,000 strong with over 1,900 different varieties. The Garden also acts as a venue for events like Camellia week, midsummer celebrations and various exhibitions.
