Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Milan’s beloved shopping arcade.

Opened in 1877, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the world’s oldest shopping mall. Named after the first king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II (1820 – 1878), it is located in central Milan. One of the more famous attractions in Milan, this shopping arcade is always jam packed with locals and visitors alike, who come to see its magnificent architecture. This building is covered with a glass and iron roof, and inside the five-storey structure are mosaics and intricately designed statues. One of the famous landmarks here would be the 36 metre wide glass dome, which visitors can stand underneath to take in the atmosphere of the galleria. Below the glass roof also lies statues honouring Italian artists and scientists. Of course, being a shopping arcade, this place is also filled with boutique shops, cafés and restaurants, where visitors can enjoy a classic Italian meal inside a stunningly beautiful building.

Tips Before You Go
This is a favourite haunt for wealthy people in Italy, as almost all the shops here are high-end. Even though the items sold here are expensive, it is still worth a visit to check out the grand architecture of the Galleria. However, do take note that the place gets extremely crowded in the evenings and on weekends. As such, you might want to visit on a weekday morning or afternoon instead.
