Galleria Doria Pamphilj

A Portrait That Made the Pope Frown.

Housed in the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, the gallery is one of the most extensive private art collections, all owned by the Doria Pamphilj family. The collection is the result of over 500 years of acquisitions and additions, including the portrait of Pope Innocent X done by Spanish painter Diego Velázquez which is undoubtedly one of the finest portraits. It was even reported that the Pope himself grumbled about the depiction being too realistic and hence, the painting was hidden from the public for a couple of centuries. It is interesting to note that Pope Innocent X - born as Giovanni Battista Pamphilj, was, in fact, part of the Doria Pamphilj family. It was also around the time of Pope Innocent X's papacy that the family rose to fame.
