Gaasbeek Castle

A peek into the history of Belgium.

The Gaasbeek Castle is today, a national museum situated in the municipality of Lennik in Flemish Brabant, Belgium. It was constructed in 1240 as a fortress against the County of Flanders. However, as unfortunate as it is, it was demolished by Brussels city troops who attempted to avenge Everard t’Serclaes’ assassination as commanded by Lord of Gaasbeek. The following centuries saw the castle housing several noble lords with the likes of Rene de Renesse, who refurbished the building. During this period, the castle also attained its medieval façade. The design was conceptualised by architect Charles Albert and ordered by the Marquis d’Arconati Visconti. His widow then donated the castle to the state, including the art collection. Therefore, allowing us all the opportunity to view this magnificent beauty for ourselves.
