Fuxian Lake (抚仙湖)

Come explore the secrets of this mysterious lake.

If ever a lake could embody the story of a great country, this would be it. Fuxian is vast and still, projecting the deep blue of the sky in every direction. Like the country may seem to many uncomprehending outsiders, the surface of the lake is inscrutable. But just as how still water runs deep, there is much going on under the surface of Fuxian. It’s the third-deepest freshwater lake in China, and hides many secrets in its seemingly undisturbed depths. Local myth has long stated that the outlines of a sunken city under the lake could be seen from the tops of the nearby mountains on a calm day. And in 2001, a Chinese archaeological team delved (literally) into the heart of the mystery, exploring its previously unchartered waters with the help of a submarine. They discovered various flagstones and ancient ruins, undeniable traces of construction on a scale that could barely be conceived of. Wild rumours abounded: was it the ancient city of Yuyuan, that disappeared hundreds of years ago? Or the remains of the ancient Dian country that also vanished in a mysterious and unknown manner? Although the answer is still unknown today, the Lake continues to captivate the imagination of numerous visitors and will surely do likewise to you.
