The dedication to the deities of Nikko’s three most sacred mountains.
The Futarasan Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Nikko. Constructed in 782 by Shōdō Shōnin (735 – 817), a monk who brought Buddhism into Nikko, it enshrines three deities: Ōkuninushi, Tagorihime, and Ajisukitakahikone. This shrine is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikko, together with the nearby Nikko Toshogu and Nikkosan Rinnoji. Check out the Meoto Sugi (husband and wife cedar) as well as the Oyako Sugi (parent-child cedar), which is said to give blessings for a good marriage and healthy family relationships. The most famous landmark of the shrine would be the Shinkyo Bridge, which is one of the three most beautiful bridges in Japan. Crossing the bridge also marks the entrance of Nikko.
