Frietmuseum

A quirky, pop-culture museum that gives you a better look at the cornerstone of modern Belgian society – the fry.

The world’s best-loved junk food, the fry, now has a museum dedicated to its history. Housed in Saaihalle, Freitmuseum is the first museum in the world to explore all things related to fries and potatoes.

At the entrance stands a life-size model of a fry stand, welcoming visitors into the museum. This quirky, almost comical museum proceeds to take visitors through a complete history of the fry: from the potato’s origins in Peru 12,000 years ago to its introduction to Europe and the Belgians’ invention of the fry. It also explores condiments, a classic pairing that a fry would not be complete without. The museum also offers practical tips on how to cook the perfect fry, making sure that you’ll never fish soggy, dismal fries out of your deep-fryer again.

End off your visit with a taste of Belgium’s unofficial national food at the museum’s fry café, where you’ll get a small discount if you show them your entrance ticket. Adorably eccentric and sometimes resembling a comic book world, a trip to the Freitmuseum is an ideal lighthearted afternoon activity, as well a perfect excuse to indulge in some Belgian fries.
