Freycinet Marine Farm

Sitting in the middle of an unbroken blue mirror bordered by rolling green brush and eucalyptus, enjoy freshly shucked oysters and the chewy texture of steamed mussels at the Freycinet Marine Farm.

Set between the estuarine waters of the Moulting Lagoon and the mineral-rich sea waters pouring in from the Tasman Sea, the Freycinet Marine Farm is perfectly situated to farm shellfish. The farm is split into 6 different sections dedicated to a different marine crop, the entire compound just a little shy of 150 acres. The proximity of the protected Freycinet National Park means that there are no industrial zones or discharge areas within distance, making the produce from the farm some of the freshest you can find. So sure are the farmers of the water’s purity that often the shelled delicacies are delivered directly from their latch beneath the soft sand to an eager customer’s dinner plate. With the help of a guide, you can make your way along the boarded walkways towards the open cray pots, laid out for observation before wading through the waters to watch before your eyes the entire process from the point of harvest till packaging. The beveled surface of the Pacific oysters are found in abundance in the estuarine waters of the farm while the southern marine zones by the National Park overflow with the ebony black encasements of the Adult Pacific mussels and native Tasmanian Blue mussels. As the guided walk winds to an end, help yourself to the endless offerings at the restaurant by the ocean. Shellfish isn’t the only thing you can dig into here, with their plentiful offerings of the muscular abalone, rocklobster and enticing pink salmon sourced from local fishermen. A trip to the Freycinet Marine Farm will leave your taste buds tingling with the heady umami flavors exploding within as you unlock the secrets behind the shellfish at your grocers’.
