The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is a memorial based in Washington D.C, built to commemorate the 32nd President of the United States and the era which he represented. The architect, Lawrence Halprin, saw this as a personal endeavour as he himself had fond memories of the president. Dedicated on May 2, 1997 by then President Bill Clinton, the monument spans over 7.5 acres and traces 12 years of US history through four outdoor rooms, with each commemorating one of Roosevelt’s terms in office. The rooms display sculptures and photographs to remember the president, including scenes from the Great Depression, as well as a bronze statue of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt standing before the United Nations emblem. Interestingly, the designers took into account Roosevelt’s physical impairments and designed memorials accessible to others with such disabilities including tactile reliefs with braille writing for the blind. History buffs will definitely enjoy exploring the memorial.

Tips Before You Go
Unlike most landmarks in Washington D.C, the memorial is located somewhere discreet, and as such, it attracts smaller visitors. This is a boon for those who wish to avoid the hordes of tourists who swarm to other landmarks in the city. Try to visit during the cherry blossom season, as the sight of cherry blossoms blooming everywhere will make your visit here extra special.
