Frangokastello Beach

With sandy shores ringing a castle and steep bluffs sheltering the bay, the Venetian landscape of Frangokastello has been well preserved against time.

With the famous Frangokastello Fort in its backyard, dust red bricks rising above the sandy shores, Frangokastello Beach is perfect for that picnic getaway in the Mediterranean. Located on the southern coast of Crete, the Frangokastello beach is as sheltered as the village it earns its name from. With the rippling waves of the Libyan sea at its feet, the shores of Frangokastello have gradually been worn over time into sandy shelves.

Wade into the shallow waters fissured into a dozen fractures by the refraction of sunlight or grab your snorkeling gear as you head to the pebbled shores of the western beachfront. If the loud touting of tavernas and bustling crowd of tourists are not to your taste, take a short walk east of the castle for about 10 minutes. The walk will bring you to towering heaps of sand beyond which lie the powdery white shores of Orthi Ammos, often devoid of the hustle of tourist frequented spots. The shallow waters are often an open invitation for the children who chase the glancing sunlight across the water. Yet it clearly isn’t just the hearts of children that the serene beaches of Frangokastello manage to enrapture.

Tips Before You Go
A short check on the weather report should inform you whether northern winds are to be expected during your beach trip. Unfortunately, the way the sparse trees are located against the high mountain funnels the northerlies to leave visitors with fistfuls of sand being blown at their faces. Not the best experience you can hope for.
