The Fortifications of Xi’an were built during the Ming dynasty, under the rule of its first emperor. Also known as the Xi’an City Wall, it remains the only ancient fortification that still stands in a complete rectangular circuit. However, very few people seem to have taken notice of it, seeing as the Great Wall regularly outshines it and is more prominently displayed in the media.
Nevertheless, the Xi’an City Wall is still a monumental part of China’s rich history. After all, it has safeguarded the city from centuries of wars, and yet still stands proud and tall as if nothing ever happened. Visitors who walk around the wall should be prepared for a hike that is steeped in China’s history. In fact, it would seem that the hike is more educational than arduous, but after all, you shouldn’t expect anything less from this historical treasure.
