Fortifications of Xi’an (西安城墙)

The beginning of the Silk Road.

The Fortifications of Xi’an were built during the Ming dynasty, under the rule of its first emperor. Also known as the Xi’an City Wall, it remains the only ancient fortification that still stands in a complete rectangular circuit. However, very few people seem to have taken notice of it, seeing as the Great Wall regularly outshines it and is more prominently displayed in the media.

Nevertheless, the Xi’an City Wall is still a monumental part of China’s rich history. After all, it has safeguarded the city from centuries of wars, and yet still stands proud and tall as if nothing ever happened. Visitors who walk around the wall should be prepared for a hike that is steeped in China’s history. In fact, it would seem that the hike is more educational than arduous, but after all, you shouldn’t expect anything less from this historical treasure.

Tips Before You Go
To even get up the wall in the first place, you are expected to climb up a long flight of stairs. This might not be suitable for those who have difficulties walking. Once you reach the wall, it\'s a long walk to the other side, but if you\'re fit enough, you should attempt it anyway, seeing as the views are absolutely magnificent.
