Fort St. Elmo

A star-shaped fort.

Named after the patron saint of mariners, Fort St. Elmo lives up to its name as guardian of the entrance to two important harbours in Malta: Marsamxett Harbour and Grand Harbour. Built by the Knights in 1552 after an Ottoman fleet sailed into Marsamxett Harbour undetected, the star-shaped fort later became especially significant during the Great Siege of Malta of 1565, bearing the brunt of the attack from Turkish forces for much of the Ottoman invasion.

Today, the Fort St. Elmo has been restored to its former glory and is also home to the National War Museum, featuring military weapons and other memorabilia from World War I and II. Of particular importance are three historically significant icons of the museum: the Gloster Sea Gladiator N5520 FAITH, Roosevelt's Jeep 'Husky' and Malta’s award for gallantry, the George Cross. The ancient, beige-coloured walls and the brick-lined grounds of the fort continue to command awe and attention, making the Fort St. Elmo well worth a visit for its stunning vista and great historical value.
