A pentagonal hill fort with a labyrinth of secret tunnels.
Situated on the outskirts of the city of Maastricht, Fort Sint Pieter is an impressive 18th century multi-storied fort with a moat. Atop a grassy verdant hill, you will get to scour each level of the fort and uncover its hidden history as the tour guide regales you with interesting stories about the fort. Peer down the endless abyss of a 40-metre deep well within the fort, or peek through the shooting holes along the cannon gallery. Once you reach the top of the fort, you will be afforded with spectacular views of the rolling countryside spreading into the distance. On the other hand, tunnels snake deep beneath the fort, bringing to light the lives of refugees who hid in these caves during wars. With a total span of over eighty metres, these tunnels connect the fort to Sint Pietersburg. From its fortifications to its underground caves, this is history revived.
