Fort Rinella

A low-lying, coastal artillery battery that houses a massive one-of-a-kind cannon.

Also known as Rinella Battery, Fort Rinella is less of a defensive fort and more of a building designed to operate and protect its artillery within. Built in the 19th century, Fort Rinella is now an open-air museum that hosts the most immersive and engaging experience of the 19th century period. You can take your pick of a guided day tour or night tour – both will feature a tour guide straight from a 19th century barracks, a film show, and a live firing demonstration. While the night tour may provide a more surreal experience, throughout the day, you will be in for a full-course meal of live military displays and historical re-enactments. From swords to guns, Fort Rinella is rife with excitement. You may even get to fire some vintage weapons with your own two hands, including the prized 100-ton cannon that sits proudly as the highlight of Fort Rinella. Travel underground to the hydraulic pump that loads and fires the world’s largest cannon, or explore the interesting museum exhibits that detail the gruelling life of a 19th century soldier. Words simply are not enough – this is living history in its pure, unadulterated form.
