Fort Point

See this formidable fort with your own eyes.

Built during the Gold Rush period, Fort Point in San Francisco has been protected as a National Historic Site since 1970. Completed in 1861, this fort, among others, played an integral role in the defense of San Francisco Bay, showing just how serious the city was with regard to protecting its gold fields. The fort uses the American “third system” military architectural style, utilizing strong walls and was once well-equipped with weapons. Fortunately, despite coming close to being demolished due to the Golden Gate Bridge’s construction, the engineer Joseph Strauss understood the importance of the fort and made alterations to ensure its safety. Head down to Fort Point, for a greater understanding of military strategy from days past, and appreciation of this fascinating structure.

If you are interested in the Ranger-led evening tours which are also free, these will have to be booked beforehand and are restricted to only 25 people for each tour.
