Come for the hang gliding, stay for the flora and fauna.
Nestled in the Golden Gate National Recreational Area is a popular spot for hang gliding, the Fort Funston. With its 200 feet high sandy bluffs by the coast, you are more or less guaranteed some strong winds for a fun-filled day of hand gliding, especially between the months of March and October. Those blessed with green fingers will be happy to know that the Native Plant Nursery even provides you with opportunities to assist the park in their restoration projects. This includes helping to grow native plants, which have deep roots and are specially adapted to grow in a sand-dune environment. Animal lovers who are fortunate enough might also be able to catch a glimpse of the rare Bank swallows, as Fort Funston is one of two known coastal areas where they build their nests.
Additionally, for an ocean view that seems to have jumped out of a postcard and landed right in front of your very eyes, visit the Fort Funston Beach Walk. Lush greenery, golden sand and the pristine blue ocean layer together like a natural trifle, one that you can’t wait to get your hands (or feet) on. The Beach walk is also well known for its tolerance towards dogs, and thus, you are likely to see many people happily strolling, or even jogging, with man’s best friend. End the day by relaxing with your loved ones on the beach, as you admire the stunning sea view coupled with a beautiful backdrop of the crimson sunset. And if you’re lucky, you just might catch a glimpse of a Bottle Nose Dolphin too!
